“It’s an honor to bring the art gallery back to a physical space after two years of being virtual,” said SIGGRAPH 2022 Art Gallery President Daria Tsoupikova, of University of Illinois at Chicago. “The projects selected by the jury are fascinating, remarkable and complex in the way they experiment with interactivity.”

chosen by a jury of experts from over 120 submissions, this year’s art gallery selections embody the 2022 gallery theme, “Arts and Health, Convergence”, celebrating the diversity of art in service of humanity. Amid the anxieties and uncertainty caused by a global pandemic, artists around the world have continued to apply cutting-edge technologies to create experimental works that promote mental health, combat social and cultural isolation, increase good -be physical and improve distance communication. Program highlights include:

My body of data

Marilene Olivier and Scott Smallwood, University of Alberta; Stephane Moore, Northwestern University; and JR Carpenter

“My Data Body” is a collaborative multimedia installation that includes sculptures, video projections, prints and virtual reality. In “My Data Body”, the medically scanned, passive, obedient, semi-transparent body becomes a site of data processing that can be separated, broken down and recomposed, or, as Yuval Harari warns, “watched under the skin”.

Weidi Zhang, University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB)

“RAY” offers a responsive art experience that reinterprets the Rayograph (photogram) – a 20th century cameraless image creation technique – from the perspective of artificial intelligent surveillance (AI) and the changing ontology of images. The system implements image-to-image translation with conditional adversarial networks and a computer vision system to translate human portraits into new Rayograph images with semantic meanings, which are then algorithmically developed through visualization in the aesthetics of light painting.

Sympathetic Wear

Junichi Kanebako, Kobe Design University; Naoya Watabe, Miki Yamamura, Keisuke Shutoand Hiroko UchiyamaJoshibi University of Art and Design; Haruki NakamuraSANNANE GK

Taking the human as its theme, Sympathetic Wear is a work of art that brings gentle healing to the mind and body of someone on the other side of the network, using an “expanding leaf” actuator that our team has developed to create the tactile sensation of a gentle caress. on the back of the receiver which is invisible to them on the screen.

Independent of the art gallery, the focus on digital art will kick off with a featured speaker session by Sougwen Chung on Monday August 8th. The session, titled “Seeing Double — Bridging Dualities With Relational Intelligence,” will cover the thesis question: Where does “IA” end and “we” begin? Chung is a Chinese-Canadian artist and (re)scholar based in Londonand former MIT researcher, whose work explores the hand-made mark and the machine-made mark.

“It is an honor to deliver the keynote speech for SIGGRAPH 2022,” said Chung. “More than ever, the interdisciplinarity of our fields requires new spaces for questioning, invention and collaboration. After two years of absence Canadawhere I grew up, I can’t wait to go back and talk to other researchers from all disciplines about what we are building and why.”

The SIGGRAPH 2022 Art Gallery is open to Experience, Experience Plus, Full Conference, and Full Conference Supporter registration levels. Featured speaker sessions, including Chung’s, are open to the Full Conference and Virtual Conference registration levels. Register for the conference at
