Immersive art experiences have become popular in recent years for the unique and Instagram-worthy excitement they provide. The international art collective teamLab – an interdisciplinary group of artists, engineers, animators and various other specialists – creates interactive digital art installations that allow the viewer to become an active participant in the work of ‘art. The collective’s work has been presented in venues around the world, including New York, Paris, London, Beijing, etc. For its latest installation, teamLab brings its immersive worlds to Barcelona, ââSpain.
Title teamLab, the exhibition opens at CaixaForum and presents two âimmersive works of art that explore new relationships between people in the same physical spaceâ. The two exhibits are entitled Born from darkness a loving and beautiful world, and Graffiti Nature: lost, submerged and reborn. Each artwork is created using digital technology that allows the artwork to be altered as people engage and interact with it. They allow the viewer to influence the fascinating visuals that surround them as they touch and interact with their various elements, some even of their own creation.
âArt created using digital technology has the ability to change relationships between people in the same space,â says teamLab. âFor most of the art so far, the presence of other spectators had been an obstacle. But when a work produced using digital technology changes depending on the presence or behavior of visitors, the boundaries between the work and the visitor become blurred. In this case, the visitor becomes part of the work of art itself.
âIt changes the relationship between a work of art and an individual to the relationship between a work of art and a group of individuals. Whether a spectator was around five minutes ago, or how the person next to you is behaving now, suddenly becomes important. If other people’s interactions with a work of art create changes that we think are beautiful, then the presence of others can in itself become a positive element. By immersing ourselves and melting into working with others, we explore a continuity between people, as well as a new relationship that transcends the boundaries between people and the world.
The installation is on display until January 9, 2022. To learn more about the incredible work of teamLab, visit their website or follow them on Instagram.
