Using Sydney’s iconic brutalist building, Sirius, as a case study, in this article, RCC describes how digital design is changing the way it works.

In response to the latest regulatory changes, we are refining our processes and training to ensure we are digitally fit to meet future needs.

This will keep us ahead of the curve, as 57% of Class 2 builders and 48% of designers are currently in a basic digitization phase.

Visualization and simulation help clients fully understand their project’s construction process and quickly mitigate risk. This provides an efficient way to collect data and manage their assets, building trust and providing more certainty.

Realize benefits with Sirius

Designed at a time when the Brutalist idiom dominated architectural practice, the Sirius Building is an icon of Sydney, a pillar of the city’s skyline. JDH Capital engaged RCC to evolve this piece of history and harmonize its brutalist origins with new additions and materials.

Using digital design, we created visualizations of Sirius to communicate how the project will redefine modern life.

Using a state-of-the-art federated BIM model to merge architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and fire models, our teams analyzed the design geometry to understand the overall design and constructability of the proposed works.

This was then analyzed by our team members using Navisworks Freedom.

Clash detection and in-progress issues were handled through Revizto, allowing us to assign issues to relevant team members to resolve. Aligned point cloud scans in the federated model also allowed us to identify existing building elements and optimize the design.

Digital design lead Dean James said the technology dramatically increases time and quality savings through early design investigation and clash detection.

“Understanding virtually what you’re designing and ultimately building is key to creating opportunities for efficiency,” he said.

“During the design phase of Sirius, we used Navisworks Manage to analyze the design models against each other to identify constructability issues. This then synced with the Revizto cloud platform to communicate, manage and resolve any issues between the team.

James said this allowed all the consultants to collaborate under one roof through their digital design coordination meetings and resolve critical design issues.

“This drastically reduces the number of meetings and time spent resolving issues, ultimately saving time and increasing profitability for all stakeholders,” he said.

Throughout construction, we will implement augmented reality and intelligent reality capture technologies to perfect trades and mitigate on-site risks.

We will also use a 4D model to track supply, monitor the installation of specific items, and scenario testing methodologies to prove their viability.
