New book features digital printing method using Japanese paper that will breathe new life into photos

Carl-Evert Jonsson would like to describe his digital photo printing techniques on Japanese paper, which has qualities distinct from conventional photographic paper. After using Japanese papers for paintings and collages, he began to work with them for his photos. The technique makes it possible to experiment and try new techniques without a darkroom.

“Using Japanese Paper for Digital Printing of Photographs” (published by AuthorHouse UK) shares Evert Jonsson’s experiences using digital printing techniques of photographs on Japanese paper. After using Japanese papers (washi) for paintings and collages, he began to use the papers for his photos. This technique is not an alternative to classic film photography in which the images are produced from materials chemically and physically affected by light. Instead, ink is injected from a cartridge into a printer connected to a computer and printed on paper, in this case on washi. Darkroom facilities are not required. The only requirements are the computer, printer, washi, and photos.

The liveliness of washi fibers gives a smoother result, and washi is more absorbent than Western papers, with the ink appearing embedded rather than layered on the printed surface. The comparison of print results on matte photo paper and washi paper inspired Evert Jonsson to explore washi in detail and find his own way.

“Using Japanese paper for digital printing of photographs” is for the curious photographer who wants to experiment and try new ways. The common concept of how photographs look can perhaps be challenged by this technique as it produces images that are not so much beautiful as they are interesting and worthy of attention.
