Cooper Hewitt will represent the United States at the London Design Biennale

The American participation in the London Design Biennale (September 4-23) will be led by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Senior Curator of Contemporary Design Ellen Lupton will curate an exhibition called “Face Values,” which will modernize facial recognition technology in a way that connects art and machine learning and raises questions about our acceptance of the latter. “In representing the United States at the London Design Biennale, Cooper Hewitt will further the Smithsonian’s goal of catalyzing new conversations on issues of global significance while emphasizing design’s purpose to address complex challenges and advancing enabling solutions,” museum director Caroline Baumann said in an announcement. “Illuminating the potential of facial recognition technology to quantify, read and control our moods and movements, ‘Face Values’ encourages participants to consider the vast capabilities and unintended consequences of this rapidly evolving field of digital design.”
